Matt Hayler

Biography

Matt Hayler is senior lecturer in contemporary literature at the University of Birmingham and co-director of the Centre for Digital Cultures. His work brings together insights from the digital and cognitive humanities, (post)phenomenology, and posthumanism in order to better understand the entanglement of humans and their technological artefacts. He uses e-reading, contemporary experimental literature and film, transhuman body modification, and developments in cognitive and biological sciences as case studies for exploring how cognition, knowledge, agency, and materiality become intertwined across human and non-human actors in lively environments. His current research focuses on non-Western precursors to, and the ethical and political implications of, posthumanistic thinking.
