Keynote: Caleb Parkin – Being Animals Through Machines: Mole-Rats to Murmurations
Being a writer means becoming part of an ecology. During the pandemic, those ecologies have, more than ever, become mediated by machines: Zoom workshops, Insta Q&As, readings-to-camera.
In what ways does being a creative practitioner intersect with our human-animal needs? To reflect on a year-and-a-bit of being together-apart and seen-through-screens, I’ll consider the animals I’ve felt like in the digital sphere. Through this imaginative process, I want to initiate conversation around what we keep and what we ditch, which needs are met and which are not – when being animals through machines.
Do we swarm, school, mob, or – at times – feel like naked mole-rats, burrowing through electronic un-loneliness? The talk will be a mix of personal, creative reflection, approachable quotes and playful invitations to participate.
